Halibut Provencal: A Delicious Component of Your Neuropathy Treatment

Diet changes to reduce neuropathy pain can be very helpful. We recommend Mediterranean recipes because they generally have a lot of ingredients that are helpful to reduce symptoms and support nerve health. While food provides a foundation, a truly effective strategy involves a complete neuropathy treatment regimen that combines nutrition, targeted nerve supplements, and supportive therapies for long-term nerve support.

Halibut may benefit peripheral neuropathy due to its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, and selenium, which help reduce inflammation and support nerve function. Nutritional deficiencies are a common cause of neuropathy, and correcting them is an important part of treatment.

How Halibut’s Nutrients Support Nerve Health

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Halibut is a source of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA and DHA, which are concentrated in brain tissue.

  • Reduce nerve pain: Omega-3s help decrease inflammation, which can worsen nerve pain and slow healing.

  • Support nerve structure: These fats are critical for the formation and maintenance of healthy nerve cell membranes, which allows nerves to function optimally.

  • Promote nerve repair: Omega-3s may help protect nerve cells from damage and support the nerve regeneration of nerve fibers after an injury.

B Vitamins Halibut contains significant amounts of several B vitamins that are essential for the nervous system. Deficiencies in B vitamins are a known cause of neuropathy, which is why many individuals also seek out high-quality nerve supplements or look for vitamins for nerve vitality and health.

  • Vitamin B12: This vitamin is crucial for repairing nerve damage and producing the myelin sheath, a protective layer that surrounds nerve fibers.

  • Vitamin B6: It helps create neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers nerves use to communicate. Excessive intake of B6 through supplements can be toxic and may also cause neuropathy, so it is important to get it from whole food sources.

  • Niacin (Vitamin B3): This vitamin supports proper nerve function and plays a role in cellular energy and detoxification.

Selenium Halibut is an excellent source of the mineral selenium, which functions as a powerful antioxidant. By consuming antioxidant-rich foods, you are using a strategy similar to what you’d find in an Anti-inflammation support supplement for neuropathy.

  • Protects nerves from damage: By reducing oxidative stress, selenium helps protect nerve cells from damage caused by free radicals.

  • Reduces inflammation: Selenium's anti-inflammatory properties can further benefit nerve health.

Fennel: Supporting Recovery and Reducing Pain

Preliminary research suggests fennel may benefit neuropathy by reducing oxidative stress, lowering inflammation, and promoting nerve tissue recovery. The main active compound responsible for these effects is anethole, a volatile oil found in fennel seeds.

If you are looking for supplements to help with numbness and tingling, the compounds in fennel offer a natural, food-based approach to similar goals.

How Fennel May Help Neuropathy

  1. Antioxidant Effects Combat Nerve Damage: The potent antioxidants in fennel act as free radical scavengers, protecting nerve cells from this damage.

  2. Anti-inflammatory Action Reduces Pain: Anethole can inhibit inflammatory signaling pathways. Animal studies have shown that anethole can alleviate the hyperalgesia (increased pain sensitivity) and allodynia (pain from normally non-painful stimuli) associated with neuropathy pain.

  3. Promotes Nerve Recovery and Regeneration: Research suggests that fennel can actively aid in the recovery of injured nerves. This aligns with the goal of using natural nerve regeneration supplements.

  4. Inhibits the Aldose Reductase Enzyme: For individuals with diabetic neuropathy, fennel may offer specific benefits by inhibiting an enzyme that contributes to nerve damage from high blood sugar.

Kalamata Olives: A Source of Neuroprotective Compounds

Kalamata olives may help with neuropathy by providing antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that protect nerves from damage caused by oxidative stress and inflammation, common factors in the development and worsening of neuropathy.

How Kalamata Olives May Help:

  • Combating Oxidative Stress: The rich antioxidant content of Kalamata olives helps neutralize free radicals, protecting nerves from this damage.

  • Reducing Inflammation: Olives contain compounds like oleic acid and polyphenols that have anti-inflammatory properties, a key element of effective nerve pain relief.

  • Neuroprotective Compounds: Specific compounds found in olives, such as oleuropein, have shown neuroprotective effects in studies by helping to protect against nerve cell loss.

  • Beneficial Fats: Olives are rich in monounsaturated fats, particularly oleic acid, which is associated with reduced inflammation and improved overall health.

Halibut Provencal Recipe

Combining supportive foods like halibut, fennel, and olives is a crucial step in a multi-faceted approach to nerve damage therapy. However, for managing more intense symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, you may also want to explore external support options such as a Red light therapy device for neuropathy pain or a fast acting neuropathy relief cream.

Ingredients

  • ▢ 1 1/4 pound halibut fillets, cut in 4 portions

  • ▢ 1 teaspoon kosher salt divided, plus more to taste

  • ▢ 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste

  • ▢ 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

  • ▢ 1/2 large yellow onion, thinly sliced

  • ▢ 1/2 bulb fennel, cored and thinly sliced

  • ▢ 3 garlic cloves, minced

  • ▢ 1 14.5-ounce can crushed tomatoes

  • ▢ 1/4 cup pitted kalmata olives, halved

  • ▢ 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves

  • ▢ 1 tablespoon chopped parsley leaves, plus more to garnish

  • ▢ Zest of 1 lemon

Instructions

  1. Get ready. Preheat the oven to 350℉. Pat the cod dry with paper towels. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside.

  2. Sauté the vegetables. Heat the olive oil in a large cast iron skillet set over medium-low heat. Add the onion, fennel, and 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt. Cook, stirring, for 7 to 9 minutes until the vegetables are softened. Add the garlic, stir, and cook for 1 minute, just until fragrant.

  3. Make the sauce. Add the crushed tomatoes, olives, thyme, parsley, lemon zest, another 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Stir and cook for about 2 minutes until the mixture begins to thicken.

  4. Bake the fish in the sauce. Nestle the cod fillets into the sauce, spooning a little over top. Transfer to the oven and bake for 6 to 8 minutes until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily.

  5. Finish and serve. Season with salt and pepper. Garnish with more chopped parsley and serve.

Notes

  • Try a different fish: You can use any sort of meaty, flaky white fish such as, cod, or even mahi mahi to make this recipe.
